From the Acting Principal
During the recent pupil free day, staff underwent professional development with a focus on lifting reading standards for students. Much of the work done was around the Reading at Rosebank program, a learning improvement goal to nurture and challenge every student to improve their inferential reading skills through deliberate, explicit teaching of Rosebank Reading Strategies in every class.
Reading and inferencing develops critical thinking, which leads to powerful and articulate writing. Staff are embedding these reading strategies as part of their classroom practice across all subjects. Students are being encouraged to embrace and implement a toolkit of strategies, including complex reading routines, inferential comprehension, and vocabulary development. This initiative extends beyond the classroom as students are encouraged to spend more time reading at home for pleasure and leisure.
International Women’s Day
In recognition of International Women’s Day, the College has been well-represented at a number of newsworthy events, including members of our student leadership group attending the CSNSW ‘Women in Leadership Breakfast’ and the Young Women’s’ Leadership Seminar at Parliament House.
We were also inspired by Rosebank alumna, Simone Amelia Jordan (Class of 1998) who, as the guest speaker at our College assembly last week, shared her personal story and her passion for equity and inclusion. Simone's story and her achievements were featured in the Alumni section of the College Newsletter published on 13 November 2023 and we were thrilled to have Simone on site to talk to us all on this special day.
Simone spoke about the importance of holding on to faith, creating a community where everyone feels valued and pursuing dreams with relentless determination. This echoes much of what is reflected in the pages of Rosebank, past and present and I hope that our students are feeling inspired to continue this spirit of creating positive change in the future.
CARITAS Fundraiser
Students were reminded during assembly, that the College is raising money this term for CARITAS Australia and that if every student and member of staff donated the cost of just ONE takeaway coffee or hot chocolate, we would raise over $8,000 for those much less fortunate than we are. The challenge has been set.
Uniform Update
Winter Uniform:
The following new winter uniform options for students will be introduced from the start of Term 2:
When wearing the Middle School winter pinafore students may wear:
- Rosebank dark navy tights or white socks which are above ankle height (foldable).
- Long or short-sleeve pinstriped blouse.
When wearing pants students may wear:
- Long OR short-sleeve pinstriped blouse (girls) / striped shirt (boys).
Summer Uniform:
The College will also be introducing tailored shorts as a summer uniform option for middle and senior school students. Parents will be notified when these are available.
As we pass the fourth weekend of Lent, I congratulate all our students who have managed to stick to their Lenten commitments so far. With only three weeks remaining until Easter, perhaps we could all make an extra ‘sacrifice’ for Lent, through that $5 or $10 donation to CARITAS.

Hildegard, Mary MacKillop and International Women's Day
Last week I joined Mission and Ministry Leaders from Good Samaritan schools for the annual Good Samaritan Education Mission Leaders Conference organised by Ms Gabrielle Sinclair, the GSE Director of Formation and Mission Integration. This year our conference was held at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney. Using the theme of Holy Audacity we listened, learned, studied and shared together. Of all our sessions there were three that stood out as especially significant.
Our charism or gift as Good Samaritan Benedictines is expressed in a particularly special way in our inherited tradition of liturgical prayer. Sisters Christine Manning, Elizabeth Brennan and Elizabeth Murray each gave voice to elements of this tradition. Sr Christine took us on a wondrous journey through several chapters from the Rule where Benedict teaches the purpose and significance of the oratory - the place of prayer - and its place in the community. Chapter 52 sets out the purpose of the oratory and the attitude of the community gathered for prayer. Benedictine prayer is both communal and personal; the one feeding the other. Both are necessary. For this reason the oratory must be kept aside for prayer and nothing else. It is THE sacred place within the sacred space of the whole community. All prayer must lead and shape the Christian’s life, and so it is no surprise to read the following chapter - 53 - which opens with one of the most quoted of all sentences from the Rule: “All strangers are to be welcomed as Christ”. My prayer in the oratory where I encounter Christ in the Word, the community and the Eucharist, must be such that I encounter Christ in the stranger or guest at the door. It is the same Christ in a different guise.
We had an immersion into communal prayer with Sisters Elizabeth and Elizabeth taking us into the world of chant and the power of singing the Psalms with one voice. It was a little bit of stop and start, but by the end of the session and indeed, by the end of the conference, we were singing with one voice. Both Elizabeths showed their deep understanding of the liturgy and gave us insight into some of ways we could take our common heritage and bring it into the life our school communities. The session also included many references to our history, the place of singing within Catholic Christian worship and practical helps for structuring prayer. There were several “take aways” - silence: the more the better; words: less is more; pause: a lot; gestures: make them big; reading and readers: train well; singing: yes.
The second significant moment was spent with medieval scholar Carmel Bendon, who presented us with a riveting and absorbing introduction to the life and writings of St Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Carmel’s love of Hildegard was evident and her passion for making this amazing woman, scholar, mystic and faithful Benedictine nun and Abbess, known was infectious. We were queuing to buy her book at the end! One of Carmel’s points has echoed with me since then: “if the mystic’s experience and insights were true and valid at the time they experienced them, they are true and valid today”. Hildegard has much to teach us.
The third moment for me was a combination of our shared Lectio in the place Mary MacKillop called “home” from 1884 until her death in 1909. Spending time with God’s Word in that sacred place was a blessing. I had time to sit with Mother Mary at her tomb as well as in the room in Alma Cottage where she died. The peace, serenity and joy that envelops both those spaces could almost be touched physically. Mary MacKillop made us very welcome in her home.
Next Saturday, 16 March, is the day Good Samaritans remember Archbishop John Bede Polding. Our founding father along with Mother Scholastica Gibbons hold a special place in the heart of all the Rosebank Community. With Mary MacKillop and Hildegard, we will never want for women who care for us, love us and walk with us on our journey, along with our saintly menfolk.

Professional Staff Development Day: Reading at Rosebank 4 March, 2024
If you have received an email from a Rosebank teacher or support staff member over the last few weeks, you might have noticed something extra added to their signature at the end of their email.
Along with their name and role in the College, they will tell you what book they are currently reading and that it is ‘...deepening our reading culture @ Rosebank’. Maybe you have even heard from your young person’s teacher, to suggest that they do more reading, or what is being read in class in terms of content, concepts or even, yes, fun!
Reading has always been an important skill. In our modern world it is more important than ever
Rosebank College is not alone in wanting to improve student reading for pleasure, and most importantly to develop a ‘toolkit’ of strategies to get at comprehension and meaning, and higher order reading skills such as inferential reading. Without these important skills, students find responding to questions and understanding higher order texts increasingly difficult the further they move into the Senior Years of learning.
Last week, on 4 March, Rosebank College Teachers spent the day immersed in Reading at Rosebank teaching and learning strategies, led by our Literacy and Research Coordinator, Louise Speke. Further into the day, colleagues from across every faculty who had done training to become reading coaches, organised small teams to create teaching and learning resources based around textual extracts, designed to challenge students as complex texts. Each small group devised strategies to support students to be able to read the text, hold thinking and make meaning in order to strive to be better at inferential comprehension.

Catholic Schools NSW International Women’s Day Breakfast
On Friday, 8 March, three College leaders attended the Catholic Schools NSW's annual International Women's Day Breakfast in the CBD, hearing an inspirational keynote speech from the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP.
We were in good company on the morning, with a range of leaders from different schools, as well as our Good Samaritans Sisters, the Sisters of St Joseph and Sisters of Charity. Ms Plibersek reminded us that the ‘legacy of Australia’s nuns can be found in education, in infrastructure, in school and in hospitals. They ran towards need when others didn’t. But what drove their mission was love.’
She talked about her admiration for these women - and it was easy to see the strong values we still continue to uphold at Rosebank as a Catholic, co-educational College.
The morning was a chance for students to meet other leaders, principals and Catholic Schools NSW team members, celebrating women like our Good Samaritan Sisters who have worked tirelessly to improve life outcomes as they always have - for the needy, homeless and women in refuges. The morning really was the opportunity to connect, inspire and be inspired.

Stage 6 Music Excursion - Encore
On Monday, 4 March, students from Year 11 and 12 Music classes met their teachers at the Sydney Opera House to attend Encore. Encore is NESA's showcase of the top music performances from the 2023 HSC Music students across NSW. Rosebank students experienced performances on a variety of instruments, including the accordion and guzheng, and also saw the elements that contribute to a "beyond Band 6" performance. The concert presented HSC compositions that scored highly at the marking centre. As the students prepare for their HSC practical programs, we hope that they found this experience enriching and inspiring.
A star in the making!
Each year our College has an intake of talented new Year 7 students, and this year is no different. Vocalist Claire Pruscino has joined our College community this year with an array of achievements under her belt. Most recently, Claire has recorded a song with Andrew Chinn from Butterfly Music - ‘Act with Grace, Live in Truth’. This song has been recorded and sent to over 1000 Catholic primary schools across Australia and New Zealand to assist in supporting liturgy.
Congratulations Claire! We are excited to have you as part of the Rosebank community.

Year 10 Photography and Digital Media
Year 10 Photography and Digital Media students are currently embarking on a fascinating journey into the world of ‘Tiny Worlds’. This unit delves into the captivating realm of macro photography, allowing them to unlock the hidden details and beauty of everyday objects. Combining technical expertise with imaginative storytelling, students are using tiny figurines to create miniature scenes within the "macro" world. By strategically placing these figures around ordinary objects, they're transforming the familiar into fantastical landscapes, blurring the lines between reality and miniature worlds.

Year 7 Character Day 2024
Year 7 and all staff are invited to come to school on Friday, 22 March dressed as their favourite character. Character Day is a proud and well-loved tradition of Rosebank College, so we urge all students to get into the spirit for the event. Students do not have to spend a lot of money on their costumes, but we do encourage creativity as prizes will be awarded. Please come to the SRSC before school to show off your costumes and talk about your favourite characters. We have lots of photos from past years pinned up inside the SRSC for your inspiration and entertainment. See if you can spot some of our teachers among them! Character Day is just one of the exciting events planned for Literacy and Numeracy Week in Week 7, so stay tuned.

Year 7 Camp
In Week 5, our Year 7 students embarked on their Orientation Camp in the serene setting of The Tops Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops. They spent their days participating in a range of recreational activities such as the giant swing, go carting, “Survivor” and a beach walk, all providing a new challenge and the opportunity for new friendships to be forged. On the first evening, the students came together in their Houses for some trivia and letter writing. One of the most popular events of the camp was the silent disco on the second night where everyone enjoyed singing and dancing along to the likes of Taylor Swift and The Village People,(to name a couple of artists)! The camp ended with the election of the new Year 7 SRC before 266 students and 17 teachers wearily returned to school. As tired as they were, it’s safe to say our students were invigorated with their new friendships and connections, which we hope will last long into the future.
Congratulations Year 7!

Science News
We are delighted to spotlight the remarkable efforts of our esteemed Science Teacher, Ms Amelia Stivaletta, who recently spearheaded an empowering event celebrating Women in Science within our vibrant Rosebank community. The above gallery showcases the event which Ms Stivaletta organised last Friday.
Ms Stivaletta's passion for fostering curiosity and innovation among our students shone brightly as she organised a dynamic Women in Science Lab Meet. The event was an engaging opportunity for our students to delve into the world of scientific exploration while celebrating the contributions of women in this field.
During the lab meet, students eagerly participated in crafting their own lip balm, body oil, and lip scrub under Ms Stivaletta's expert guidance. This hands-on experience not only provided valuable insights into the chemistry behind skincare products but also inspired a sense of creativity and empowerment among our budding scientists.
In recognition of their enthusiastic participation, each student received a special memento—a personalised bookmark and sticker as tokens of appreciation for their dedication to learning and discovery.
Ms Stivaletta's dedication to promoting women in science and fostering a love for learning is truly commendable. Her commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientific minds embodies the spirit of innovation and empowerment that defines Rosebank College.
Let us continue to celebrate and support the invaluable contributions of women in science, guided by the inspiring leadership of educators like Ms Amelia Stivaletta. We would also like to take a moment to give an extra special thank you to all Science teachers for their assistance and Joe De Meio for his support.

Prefects Afternoon Teas
Prefects Afternoon Tea at Santa Sabina College
On Wednesday, 28 February, Xavier, Natalia and I attended a leaders afternoon tea at Santa Sabina College. While there we were able to converse with around 50 leaders from multiple neighbouring schools, discussing our experiences, initiatives, school life and participating in team building activities. Sectioned off into randomly generated groups containing students from a range of schools we first engaged in a drawing/colouring in activity which came to be part of a puzzle spelling “group leader”. This activity was conversation provoking and encouraged us to bond while in a race to make the best picture possible. It was also interesting as it enabled us to see the different techniques and forms of attack used by different groups.
Following the conclusion of this activity we played a leadership themed game of Family Feud. We all agreed this was our favourite part of the afternoon. There was a great vibe and a sense of excitement and competition within the room. This experience taught us the importance of teamwork, collaboration and listening but most importantly how immersing yourself in an unfamiliar environment can be very beneficial and rewarding.

Prefects Afternoon Tea at Ascham School
On Thursday, 29 February, Tina Hatzivasiliou, Jayden Wong and I had the special opportunity to visit Ascham School in Edgecliff for a Prefect afternoon tea. It was such a valuable experience and was very insightful, as we were able to share our leadership initiatives and gain new ideas. At this event, we were able to meet so many people from various schools, which included but not were limited to Newington, SCEGGS, Kambala, Kings, Reddam, Sydney Grammar School and St. Vincent’s. The afternoon involved various activities where we were split off into different groups, these activities included guess the song, bottle flip challenge, plank hold and trivia to name a few. During the activities, each team earned points and the top two teams then competed against each other, until one team won. Jayden’s group did very well and ended up winning overall.
All in all, it was a valuable experience where we got to meet and talk to new people, sharing interesting thoughts and ideas and establishing new connections.
